Earlier in 2018, the UAE Central Bank introduced new features for the Dh100 note and also added a new image for some series, which replaced the Dubai Trade Centre with the Shaikh Zayed Bridge in Abu Dhabi. The bridge, which was designed by Zaha Hadid in 2010, was conceived in a highly mobile society that requires a new route around the Gulf south shore, connecting the three Emirates together. The bridge has gained importance after becoming a destination in itself and potential catalyst in the future urban growth of Abu Dhabi.
The design of the bridge represents s collection, or strands of structures, gathered on one shore, lifted and ‘propelled’ over the length of the channel. A sinusoidal waveform provides the structural silhouette shape across the channel, and the mainland is the launch pad for the bridge structure emerging from the ground and approach road. The main bridge arch structure rises to a height of 60 m above water level with the road crowning to a height of 20 metres above mean water level.
The UAE Bank has issues the new note in commemoration of the Year of Zayed, which coincides with the 47th National Day. The banknote carries a “Year of Zayed” logo. The new banknote pays tribute to the life of the UAE’s Founding Father, the late Sheikh Zayed Bin Sultan Al Nahyan.
At the back of the Dh100 bill is a colour-changing security feature. When the note is tilted, the colour shifts from green to blue and shows a bar of light moving from the top to bottom. The numeral 100 in Arabic is also integrated in this particular feature. The words “Year of Zayed” with the image of the late founding father is also printed at the top right-hand side. Near the centre of the bill, the colour shifting security thread has been replaced with an advanced Galaxy three-dimensional security thread. Among the new security features is a colour-changing mark which will transform from green to blue when tilted and display the note’s value in the bottom left corner.
The overall design of the note is largely unchanged, with one side continuing to show a picture of Dubai’s oldest building, Al Fahidi Fort. The other shows an image of the city’s first tower, the World Trade Centre. The note has featured the same images since it was first introduced in 1973.
“The overall design and other specifications of the currency note remain the same as the current currency notes in circulation,” a statement from the Central Bank of the UAE said. “This currency note will be put in circulation as legal tender, along with the Dh100 denomination currency notes currently in circulation.”
