Dovecote Studio | Haworth Tompkins

30The existing ruins once formed a two-story brick dovecote, and although decayed, the enigmatic quality of this ruin became well known to concert-goers and visiting musicians. “Its crumbling brickwork and rusting window grilles embodied the site’sromantic dereliction and the balance between decaying buildings and marsh landscape which first drew Benjamin Britten to Snape.”

The new studio builds upon the original industrial feel on the campus and almost seems to gracefully grow from the old. Clad in Corten weathering steel, the structure is understood as a separate structure, yet compliments the existing shell with its rust-red shade almost matching the red bricks.
“The result is a building that from a distance evokes the ghost of the original structure, but, seen from close to, reveals itself as entirely new.”

For construction, the ruin had to be stabilized prior to inserting the new structure. Suffolk Welding crafted the steel into a single weather tight form. The sides and roof planes are made of a full size 1200 x 2400mm sheets with regular staggered welded joints, into which door and window openings were cut in locations dictated by internal layout. Each panel was prefabricated by local steelworkers, then delivered to site to be assembled in a compound next to the brick ruin.
Functioning as an art studio, a large north window provides perfect lighting conditions for the artists. The studio is flexible enough to be used by artists in residence, by musicians as rehearsal or performance space or even for temporary exhibition space.

Description by “AZO. Sequeira Arquitectos Associados“: Our client asked us to reform an old dovecote in the backyard of his home. We decided to propose a playhouse for the children and a balneary to serve the pool on the ground floor. The whole family loved the idea.

Photography: Nelson Garrido

We wanted a playroom inspired by magic, fantasy and also by the childhood dreams and memories…
We decided to transform the old dovecote in a minimal concrete «tree house» that represent these memories and fantasies of pure and peaceful way.

Photography: Nelson Garrido

We look for a way that seemed the main volume is levitating as a tree house but simultaneously it had to be balanced and pure.
The idea was that the interior was absent from superfluous elements and was gradually decorated by the works and toys of these children as a reflection of the consumer society we are experiencing.
Some elements remained of the original building as the triangular window through which entered doves.

Tirat Carmel Library | Schwartz Besnosoff Architects

The Tirat Carmel library is located in front of the municipal garden at the foot of the Carmel Mountain. The building was designed to be used as a stage for all kind of scenarios or events such as fairs, markets, independence day celebration, exhibitions, municipal ceremonies etc’…

Photography: Amit Geron

The library’s unique location at the park allows the project to conduct a complex dialogue between the nature and the building on several different layers – first, the building is being conceived as a gate entrance to the municipal garden, visitors are passing through the open ground floor directly to the public garden on the other side. The inner part of the building facade (north-east direction) touches the ground and allows the garden to climb on top of the building – creating a continuous public realm between the garden and the building. On the West wing of the building, nature penetrates and creates a patio and a play area for the local kindergarten.

Entrance Floor Plan

The building was planned with major facades facing North and South – on the South located functions as the offices and the service spaces on the north wing located the main library study areas.
The building community porch allows the library visitors to have an external break and enjoy the view of the Carmel Mountain.
