Monolithe urbain | Atelier du Pont

Monolithe urbain

The construction of the future Lower Court and Family Court in Tangiers is an opportunity to participate actively in the urban renewal of the Mghogha zone and to place a new gathering point parallel to the remarkable infrastructures that mark this axis (Railway Station, TGV train repair facility, Plaza Toro arena, among others)

The architectural component strives to be both contemporary and timeless. It is inspired by simple, effective construction systems that give pride of place to technological innovation and environmental awareness. Stone elements protect against the sun and their vigorous framework clothes the compact, optimized volume. Tonal arabesques in the indoor spaces recall traditional motifs while the covering of the walls and ceilings provides a new vision of judicial establishments in Morocco.

The project contains two volumes, the larger of which will house the Lower Court, and the smaller one, the Family Court. The plan’s overall simplicity is counterbalanced by a meticulous attention to each element, each façade, and each space. The need for a compact architecture yielded an object that nevertheless feels ethereal; in order to achieve this, thermic needs were combined with a strong desire for urbanity and monumentality.
