Interesting Pavilion for Expo 2020 by the Brilliant Graft

The design of a scaffolding-like pavilion, the elements of which were brought together keeping in mind efficiency, technology and most importantly, sustainability, was released by Graft. This is its shortlisted proposal for the Dubai 2020 Expo’s German Pavilion, which was open to a public tendering process.

The Expo 2020’s theme is “Opportunity, Sustainability, and Mobility”. It focuses on progressing and prospering without compromising the needs of future generations (Sustainability), create intelligent and productive connections (Opportunity) and contribute successfully to the future and unlock new possibilities for communities and people.
“The pavilion creates a symbiosis of German flagships, such as efficiency, technology, science, and natural environment, and displays them in a coherent overall concept.” say the architects
Graft’s design promotes free movement of the container of knowledge, through a network of junctions in the exhibition. These act as a non-hierarchical decentralized network. Also, as part of the proposal, the pavilion will have the trends of the present and future, thematized on 6 platforms. These will be connected by a participative and interactive exhibition concept. The exhibition is visible at each point of the pavilion for the visitors. The free movement of the visitors through the orthogonally structured space creates a flow and exchange of information. The transparency and the architecture of the structure make evident the free flow of the visitors.
The heart of the pavilion has a spacious central room which becomes the emotional antithesis to the rational factual knowledge resource. This space connects itself to the knowledge resource using “interface”.The studio has used a modern extension of the German oak to build the central element of the interface. This “becomes the object of knowledge and information medium and mediator through digital methods and robot-supported processes.”
The pavilion is made of components and materials that can be easily dismantled. The architects chose easily-found materials to build the pavilion on site. The construction and combination of the components are designed to make dismantling easier. Moreover, the separation into individual-material groups gives the added benefit of optimal recycling.
In addition to this, the structure can be rearranged in different configurations to cater to the changing requirements of exhibition spaces in the future.
Expo 2020 Dubai will take place from October 20, 2020, until April 10, 2021.
