Unveiling of the Breathtaking Dundee Design Museum

In collaboration with Rapid Visual Media, V&A Dundee have released drone footage and imagery of the much anticipated Kengo Kuma structure. A project which took nearly three and a half years to complete, the design museum marks the first UK building by the Japanese architect.

The new V&A Dundee is Scotland‘s first dedicated design museum. The footage showcases the building jutting out into the River Tay. With a design inspired by the cliffs of Scottland, the museum is planned to investigate the global importance of design as well as present the country’s achievements in the field of design. It stands on reclaimed land at the center of the £1 billion Dundee waterfront transformation.

The museum is made of 2,500 pre-cast concrete panels hung from curving walls, which cast varying shadows depending on the weather conditions. The idea behind the design was to create a collaboration between nature and architecture while providing the city with a living space.

The museum’s exterior has a jagged facade and a wooden deck. The unique shapes of each of the panels which make up the facade were designed in advance using a 3D model. Then using a formula of cement, reinforcement mesh, and stone aggregate, each panel was meticulously pre-cast. Careful planning was required to map out the brackets for each of the panels for construction.

The museum comprises a public hall which serves as a welcoming and lively public square. It can accommodate a number of uses, like concerts, large-scale exhibitions, installations, and art workshops. A “Design in Action” center, large exhibition galleries, a museum shop, a restaurant, and a cafe can also be accessed by the visitors through this public space.

The design museum has galleries featuring 300 exhibits from V&A’s rich collection of  Scottish Designs as well as pieces from museums and private collectors in the UK and around the world. Furthermore, it houses an oak room by Charles Rennie Mackintosh which was restored, conserved, and reconstructed for the visitors to experience.

The opening of the museum was celebrated by a 3D Festival; a 2-day event on the 14th and 15th of September 2018, which included music and dancing performances as well as design and light collaborations.

The V&A Dundee is open every day from 10 am to 5 pm, and it is free to enter. It opens with an exhibition which explores the design and cultural impact of the ocean liner, on a global scale.
