Welcoming is not the word that comes to mind when entering the home of ‘American Psycho’ Patrick Bateman. The Manhattan-based fictional business man’s eclectic apartment offers a glimpse into the troubled psyche of the character. The 3D-modeling firm, Archilogic, maps Bateman’s apartment via a 3D virtual tour that allows you to walk into the apartment. Surveying the rooms where Patrick Bateman woke, slept, and bathed in an eerie experience altogether, especially since the living room is where Bateman killed his victims with an axe.
Material Perfection
The movie released in 2000, depicts the life of the fictional Patrick Bateman played by actor Christian Bale. Bateman is a cold calculating investment banker who has all the makings of a psychopath. Equally cold and unwelcoming is Bateman’s apartment which is one of the main settings in the movie itself. The set designed by Gideon Ponte is a reflection of Bateman’s character. Bateman prides himself on material perfection and the importance of appearances, but this only leaves him looking like a hollow shell.
“It’s Not Easy on the Eye”
Though his furnishings are expensive with Mies Van Der Rohe Barcelona Salon Suite and a Mackintosh chair, his living quarters feel soulless. What adds to the discomfiting nature of the space is the artwork by Robert Longo in contrasting black and white. Surprisingly, Ponte’s choices for the set design to give off this feeling of unease were entirely intentional. “Typically in film, you never use white; you normally drop it down a couple of tones on the walls in order for the skin tones to read well. So that’s why it was sort of jarring — it’s not easy on the eye,” says Ponte to Yahoo! Movies in a 2015 interview.
The question to ask here though is what makes Bateman’s apartment so eerie? Even for those who haven’t seen the movie, an apartment with monotonous interiors, like Bateman’s, would be seen as impersonal and irregular. Archilogic allows you to curate and choose your own furnishings to see how a space that is devoid of life can become lively. Actually, this is not the first time Archilogic has mapped the apartment of a fictional character. Archilogic’s other similar virtual tour is of Don Draper’s apartment from Mad Men, played by Jon Hamm. We hope to see more 3D virtual tours by these apartment mappers, though hopefully for characters that are a lot more likable and less scary.
