A pavilion made of molded plywood, that has been constructed in a furniture shop in Singapore, won the Inside Festival’s World Interior title of 2017.

The pavilion was originally set at the Xtra store in Singapore to showcase the works of Herman Miller, who is a manufacturer of office furniture. The molded cave-like plywood structure was created to be in keeping with the molded office items being displayed.

Produce Workshop, which is a Singapore-based design practice, made the pavilion look like a piece of upholstery by adding button-like items to the interior and the exterior, calling it ‘Fabricwood’.

The molded pavilion was chosen by the Super Jury members to win the ‘World Interior of the Year’ title. The Jury included architects like Mark Dytham from Klein Dytham Architecture, Isay Weinfeld, and Monica von Schmalensee from White Arkitekter.

A fresh approach to a project. It was about the process rather than the end product that led to a unique and new solution,” the jury commented. “He showed a clear understanding of the brand. Engineering leads to the architecture. Process creating an invention.”

The project was chosen from a shortlist that contained eight other names among which were Neri & Hu and Heneghan Peng Architects.
During the first stages of the competition, the jury panel praised the pavilion for being a “clever, innovative installation with a resonance well beyond the brief”.

The World Festival of Interiors took place between the 15th and the 17th of November, 2017, at Arena Berlin, Germany. The prizes are granted to the most unique and innovative interior design of the year.

In 2016, the award went to a single-color clothes shop designed by AN Design in the city of Hangzhou, China. The venue featured a warehouse theme with the clothes hanging from geometric crossbars.
