A previous government HQ in Hong Kong is being converted by Foster + Partners into a lavish hotel. Respecting the authentic modernist exterior of the building, the firm is only refurbishing the interiors to house the new branch of Niccolo Hotels.

Anticipated to open in 2018, the Murray Building is composed of 27 floors and will provide the guests with great views of the city. Ron Phillips has designed the building in the 1960s to accommodate several government offices and departments. He aimed to provide the employees with a comfortable work environment via the building’s famous slanted windows which have provided the interiors with adequate shade.

The architecture of the building is in direct response to the climate of Hong Kong, with recessed windows, carefully orientated to avoid the harsh tropical sunlight,” Foster + Partners commented.

The new hotel, which is expected to have a new glass doorway, will comprise 336 rooms, several event areas, meeting spaces, and restaurants. The concrete base of the Murray encompasses a set of arches which is a distinct feature of the classical design of the building. Moreover, an old tree that still stands within the site will be kept and elevated via a podium which will link the base of the building to the nearby highway.

The new design retains the facade while upgrading other aspects of the building and extending its life by introducing new functions appropriate for the changing demands of the city, giving it a sustainable legacy for years to come.“, the firm added.

The historic building resides at Cotton Tree Drive, downtown Hong Kong, and it is just one of several projects under the city’s  ‘Conserving Central’ initiative.
