100Architects Design Vibrant Red Planet Playground in Shanghai

100architects have completed the design for Red Planet in Shanghai. Located in one of Shanghai’s biggest shopping malls, the Shanghai-based firm created this unconventional playground as a free-spirited play area for both kids and adults. Known as “Red Planet”, this unorthodox recreational playground promotes interactions and provides a better shopping experience for customers with a fun twist.

The striking red installation acts as an interruption to the public space, creating a point of interest for people walking by and definitely grabbing children’s attention. Following a monochromatic white and red color scheme, the Red Planet playground uses interesting topographic bubble-like forms where children climb, slide and have fun, in addition to a basketball field with a bubbly floor design, chalkboard pyramids, and a meandering racing track which frames the playground.

With benches surrounding the installation, parents can safely watch their kids let out their energy and creativity and can join in some of the random games played within this family-friendly installation.

Red Planet does not only aim to provide a fun and lively recreational activity for the children but also enhance their imagination.

According to the 100architects team, they say ‘Our proposal arose from a surreal approach, from the intention of breaking the conventional rules of perception, of what is already conceived as reality, in order to trigger kids’ imagination and creativity as well as immersing them in a colorful experience,’
